A Cobblestone Walkway

In support to the Intramuros Administration in promoting the Intramuros to the World Travel Awards, I will share my memorable experiences in this wall city.

I’m Manileno by heart and by blood. I grew up in Tondo where my parents are teachers at Magat Salamat Elementary School. Whenever they had “lakbay-aral,” I always be there as “saling-pusa.” My tatay was my historian, he was a fan of our national hero and he always tell the good stories of Jose Rizal.

Fort Santiago was a playground for me from the days as “saling-pusa” to my college days as my tambayan because our school (CCM/UDM) do not have a quadrangle or grounds for the students who were taking their long breaks in their class schedule. This Fort is really one of the important historical site in Manila, Philippines. It was a prison dungeon way back in Spanish Era. It was declared a Shrine of Freedom in 1950. It witnessed many battles of our fellowmen to the foreign invaders or colonisers.

Intramuros is a Latin word means “within the walls.” Therefore it is a city within a city or popularly knows as Walled City in the Philippines.

We still can see the old houses that has been renovated and made as museums and memorabilia of the history within this walls. It is famous for the wedding events and celebrations. And also for pre-nuptial photo shoot with the sepia theme or old era theme or for those that cannot go to Europe to have this kind of setting.

Manila Cathedral and San Agustin Church (oldest stone church in the country), located inside Intramuros and have the biggest contributions for the Catholic religion in Manila.

Last year , when Intramuros Administration opens a free entrance to all the museums located in Intramuros, we accompany our mother to have some tours in Casa Real and San Agustin Church. We didn’t manage to go to other museums because we are running out of time, we need to keep up for the long que of people. She was a teacher of Araling Panlipunan and you can see on her facial expression when she saw those old things and memorabilia. She’s really happy to walk again to the cobblestone streets.

We are looking forward to see Intramuros again after this pandemic or crisis.
